1Now the P’lishtim fought against Yisra’el, and the men of Yisra’el fled from before the P’lishtim, and fell down slain in mount Gilbo’a. 2And the P’lishtim followed hard upon Sha’ul and upon his sons; and the P’lishtim slew Yehonatan, and Avinadav, and Malkishua, the sons of Sha’ul. 3And the battle went sore against Sha’ul, and the archers overtook him; and he was in great anguish by reason of the archers. 4Then said Sha’ul to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through, and make a mockery of me.” But his armor-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Sha’ul took his sword, and fell upon it. 5And when his armor-bearer saw that Sha’ul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword, and died with him. 6So Sha’ul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, that same day together. 7And when the men of Yisra’el that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were beyond the Yarden, saw that the men of Yisra’el fled, and that Sha’ul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the P’lishtim came and dwelt in them.
8And it came to pass on the morrow, when the P’lishtim came to strip the slain, that they found Sha’ul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilbo’a. 9And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armor, and sent into the land of the P’lishtim round about, to carry the tidings unto the house of their idols, and to the people. 10And they put his armor in the house of the Ashtarot; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beit Shan. 11And when the inhabitants of Yavesh Gilad heard concerning him that which the P’lishtim had done to Sha’ul, 12all the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Sha’ul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beit Shan; and they came to Yavesh, and burnt them there. 13And they took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Yavesh, and fasted seven days.
