1And Yisra’el abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Mo’av. 2And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. 3And Yisra’el joined himself unto the Ba’al of Peh’or; and the anger of יהוה was kindled against Yisra’el. 4And יהוה said unto Moshe, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto יהוה in the face of the sun, that the fierce anger of יהוה may turn away from Yisra’el.” 5And Moshe said unto the Shoftim of Yisra’el, “Slay every one his men that have joined themselves unto the Ba’al of Peh’or.” 6And, behold, one of B’nei Yisra’el came and brought unto his brethren a Midyanit woman in the sight of Moshe, and in the sight of all the assembly of B’nei Yisra’el, while they were weeping at the door of the Ohel Mo’ed. 7And when Pin’khas Ben El Azar Ben Aharon, the kohen, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the assembly, and took a spear in his hand. 8And he went after the man of Yisra’el into the courtyard, and thrust both of them through, the man of Yisra’el, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from B’nei Yisra’el. 9And those that died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
Parashat Pin’khas
10And יהוה spoke unto Moshe, saying, 11“Pin’khas Ben El Azar, Ben Aharon, the kohen, has turned My wrath away from B’nei Yisra’el, in that he was very jealous for My sake among them, so that I consumed not B’nei Yisra’el in My jealousy. 12Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give unto him My Brit Shalom’; 13and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting kehunah; because he was jealous for his Elohim, and made atonement for B’nei Yisra’el.” 14Now the name of the man of Yisra’el that was slain, who was slain with the Midyanit woman, was Zimri Ben Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Shimoni. 15And the name of the Midyanit woman that was slain was Kozbi, the daughter of Tzur; he was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midyan.
16And יהוה spoke unto Moshe, saying, 17“Harass the Midyanim, and smite them; 18for they harass you, by their wiles wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peh’or, and in the matter of Kozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midyan, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peh’or.”
אוַיֵּשֶׁב יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּשִּׁטִּים וַיָּחֶל הָעָם לִזְנוֹת אֶל בְּנוֹת מוֹאָב. בוַתִּקְרֶאןָ לָעָם לְזִבְחֵי אֱלֹהֵיהֶן וַיֹּאכַל הָעָם וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ לֵאלֹהֵיהֶן. גוַיִּצָּמֶד יִשְׂרָאֵל לְבַעַל פְּעוֹר וַיִּחַר אַף יהוה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל. דוַיֹּאמֶר יהוה אֶל מֹשֶׁה קַח אֶת כָּל רָאשֵׁי הָעָם וְהוֹקַע אוֹתָם לַיהוה נֶגֶד הַשָּׁמֶשׁ וְיָשֹׁב חֲרוֹן אַף יהוה מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל. הוַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל שֹׁפְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הִרְגוּ אִישׁ אֲנָשָׁיו הַנִּצְמָדִים לְבַעַל פְּעוֹר. ווְהִנֵּה אִישׁ מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בָּא וַיַּקְרֵב אֶל אֶחָיו אֶת הַמִּדְיָנִית לְעֵינֵי מֹשֶׁה וּלְעֵינֵי כָּל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהֵמָּה בֹכִים פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד. זוַיַּרְא פִּינְחָס בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן וַיָּקָם מִתּוֹךְ הָעֵדָה וַיִּקַּח רֹמַח בְּיָדוֹ. חוַיָּבֹא אַחַר אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל הַקֻּבָּה וַיִּדְקֹר אֶת שְׁנֵיהֶם אֵת אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאֶת הָאִשָּׁה אֶל קֳבָתָהּ וַתֵּעָצַר הַמַּגֵּפָה מֵעַל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. טוַיִּהְיוּ הַמֵּתִים בַּמַּגֵּפָה אַרְבָּעָה וְעֶשְׂרִים אָלֶף.
פרשת פִּינְחָס
יוַיְדַבֵּר יהוה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר, יאפִּינְחָס בֶּן אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן הֵשִׁיב אֶת חֲמָתִי מֵעַל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּקַנְאוֹ אֶת קִנְאָתִי בְּתוֹכָם וְלֹא כִלִּיתִי אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּקִנְאָתִי. יבלָכֵןאֱמֹר הִנְנִי נֹתֵן לוֹ אֶת בְּרִיתִי שָׁלוֹם. יגוְהָיְתָה לּוֹ וּלְזַרְעוֹ אַחֲרָיו בְּרִית כְּהֻנַּת עוֹלָם תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר קִנֵּא לֵאלֹהָיו וַיְכַפֵּר עַל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. ידוְשֵׁם אִישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל הַמֻּכֶּה אֲשֶׁר הֻכָּה אֶת הַמִּדְיָנִית זִמְרִי בֶּן סָלוּא נְשִׂיא בֵית אָב לַשִּׁמְעֹנִי. טווְשֵׁם הָאִשָּׁה הַמֻּכָּה הַמִּדְיָנִית כָּזְבִּי בַת צוּר רֹאשׁ אֻמּוֹת בֵּית אָב בְּמִדְיָן הוּא.
טזוַיְדַבֵּר יהוה אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר, יזצָרוֹר אֶת הַמִּדְיָנִים וְהִכִּיתֶם אוֹתָם. יחכִּי צֹרְרִים הֵם לָכֶם בְּנִכְלֵיהֶם אֲשֶׁר נִכְּלוּ לָכֶם עַל דְּבַר פְּעוֹר וְעַל דְּבַר כָּזְבִּי בַת נְשִׂיא מִדְיָן אֲחֹתָם הַמֻּכָּה בְיוֹם הַמַּגֵּפָה עַל דְּבַר פְּעוֹר.
