1And B’nei Yisra’el journeyed, and pitched in the plains of Mo’av beyond the Yarden at Yerekho.
Parashat Balak
2And Balak the son of Tzipor saw all that Yisra’el had done to the Amori. 3And Mo’av was sore afraid of the people, because they were many; and Mo’av was overcome with dread because of B’nei Yisra’el. 4And Mo’av said unto the elders of Midyan, “Now will this multitude lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.”
And Balak the son of Tzipor was king of Mo’av at that time. 5And he sent messengers unto Bilam the son of Be’or, to Petorah, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, “Behold, there is a people come out from Mitzrayim; behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me. 6Come now therefore, I pray, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me; perhaps I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.” 7And the elders of Mo’av and the elders of Midyan departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Bilam, and spoke unto him the words of Balak. 8And he said unto them, “Lodge here this night, and I will bring you back word, as יהוה may speak unto me.” And the princes of Mo’av abode with Bilam. 9And Elohim came unto Bilam, and said “What men are these with you?” 10And Bilam said unto Elohim, “Balak the son of Tzipor, king of Mo’av, has sent unto me [saying], 11‘Behold the people that is come out of Mitzrayim, it covers the face of the earth; now, come curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out’.” 12And Elohim said unto Bilam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people; for they are blessed.” 13And Bilam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, “Go back into your land; for יהוה refuses to give me leave to go with you.” 14And the princes of Mo’av rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, “Bilam refuses to come with us.” 15And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they. 16And they came to Bilam, and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Tzipor: Let nothing, I pray, hinder you from coming unto me; 17for I will promote you unto very great honor, and whatever you say unto me I will do; come therefore, I pray, curse me this people.” 18And Bilam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, “If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond what יהוה my Elohim says, to do any thing, small or great. 19Now therefore, I pray, tarry also here this night, that I may know what יהוה will speak unto me more.” 20And Elohim came unto Bilam at night, and said unto him, “If the men come to call you, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto you, that shall you do.” 21And Bilam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Mo’av. 22And the anger of Elohim was kindled because he went; and the Malakh יהוה placed himself in the way for an adversary against him.
Now he was riding upon his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23And the donkey saw the Malakh יהוה standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field; and Bilam smote the donkey, to turn her into the way. 24Then the Malakh יהוה stood in a hollow way between the vineyards, a fence being on this side, and a fence on that side. 25And the donkey saw the Malakh יהוה , and she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Bilam’s foot against the wall; and he smote her again. 26And the Malakh יהוה went further, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. 27And the donkey saw the Malakh יהוה , and she lay down under Bilam; and Bilam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the donkey with his staff. 28And יהוה opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said unto Bilam, “What have I done unto you, that you have smitten me these three times?” 29And Bilam said unto the donkey, “Because you have mocked me; I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would have killed you.” 30And the donkey said unto Bilam, “Am not I your donkey, upon which you have ridden all your life long unto this day? Was I ever wont to do so unto you?” And he said, “Nay.” 31Then יהוה opened the eyes of Bilam, and he saw the Malakh יהוה standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.
32And the Malakh יהוה said unto him, “Why have you smitten your donkey these three times? Behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because your way is contrary unto me; 33and the donkey saw me, and turned aside before me these three times; unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I would have even slain you, and saved her alive.” 34And Bilam said unto the Malakh יהוה , “I have sinned; for I knew not that you stood in the way against me; now therefore, if it displeases you, I will get myself back.” 35And the Malakh יהוה said unto Bilam, “Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak unto you, that you shall speak.” So Bilam went with the princes of Balak.
36And when Balak heard that Bilam was come, he went out to meet him unto Ir-Mo’av, which is on the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border. 37And Balak said unto Bilam, “Did I not earnestly send unto you to call you? Why did you not come unto me? Am I not able indeed to promote you to honor?” 38And Bilam said unto Balak, “Lo, I am come unto you; have I now any power at all to speak any thing? The word that Elohim puts in my mouth, that shall I speak.” 39And Bilam went with Balak, and they came unto Kiriyat-Khutzot. 40And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Bilam, and to the princes that were with him. 41And it came to pass in the morning that Balak took Bilam, and brought him up into Bamot-Ba’al, and he saw from there the utmost part of the people.
אוַיִּסְעוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּחֲנוּ בְּעַרְבוֹת מוֹאָב מֵעֵבֶר לְיַרְדֵּן יְרֵחוֹ.
פרשת בָּלָק
בוַיַּרְא בָּלָק בֶּן צִפּוֹר אֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה יִשְׂרָאֵל לָאֱמֹרִי. גוַיָּגָר מוֹאָב מִפְּנֵי הָעָם מְאֹד כִּי רַב הוּא וַיָּקָץ מוֹאָב מִפְּנֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. דוַיֹּאמֶר מוֹאָב אֶל זִקְנֵי מִדְיָן עַתָּה יְלַחֲכוּ הַקָּהָל אֶת כָּל סְבִיבֹתֵינוּ כִּלְחֹךְ הַשּׁוֹר אֵת יֶרֶק הַשָּׂדֶה.
וּבָלָק בֶּן צִפּוֹר מֶלֶךְ לְמוֹאָב בָּעֵת הַהִוא. הוַיִּשְׁלַח מַלְאָכִים אֶל בִּלְעָם בֶּן בְּעֹר פְּתוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר עַל הַנָּהָר אֶרֶץ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹ לִקְרֹא לוֹ לֵאמֹר הִנֵּה עַם יָצָא מִמִּצְרַיִם הִנֵּה כִסָּה אֶת עֵין הָאָרֶץ וְהוּא יֹשֵׁב מִמֻּלִי. ווְעַתָּה לְכָה נָּא אָרָה לִּי אֶת הָעָם הַזֶּה כִּי עָצוּם הוּא מִמֶּנִּי אוּלַי אוּכַל נַכֶּה בּוֹ וַאֲגָרְשֶׁנּוּ מִן הָאָרֶץ כִּי יָדַעְתִּי אֵת אֲשֶׁר תְּבָרֵךְ מְבֹרָךְ וַאֲשֶׁר תָּאֹר יוּאָר. זוַיֵּלְכוּ זִקְנֵי מוֹאָב וְזִקְנֵי מִדְיָן וּקְסָמִים בְּיָדָם וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל בִּלְעָם וַיְדַבְּרוּ אֵלָיו דִּבְרֵי בָלָק. חוַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם לִינוּ פֹה הַלַּיְלָה וַהֲשִׁבֹתִי אֶתְכֶם דָּבָר כַּאֲשֶׁר יְדַבֵּר יהוה אֵלָי וַיֵּשְׁבוּ שָׂרֵי מוֹאָב עִם בִּלְעָם. טוַיָּבֹא אֱלֹהִים אֶל בִּלְעָם וַיֹּאמֶר מִי הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה עִמָּךְ. יוַיֹּאמֶר בִּלְעָם אֶל הָאֱלֹהִים בָּלָק בֶּן צִפֹּר מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב שָׁלַח אֵלָי. יאהִנֵּה הָעָם הַיֹּצֵא מִמִּצְרַיִם וַיְכַס אֶת עֵין הָאָרֶץ עַתָּה לְכָה קָבָה לִּי אֹתוֹ אוּלַי אוּכַל לְהִלָּחֶם בּוֹ וְגֵרַשְׁתִּיו. יבוַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל בִּלְעָם לֹא תֵלֵךְ עִמָּהֶם לֹא תָאֹר אֶת הָעָם כִּי בָרוּךְ הוּא. יגוַיָּקָם בִּלְעָם בַּבֹּקֶר וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל שָׂרֵי בָלָק לְכוּ אֶל אַרְצְכֶם כִּי מֵאֵן יהוה לְתִתִּי לַהֲלֹךְ עִמָּכֶם. ידוַיָּקוּמוּ שָׂרֵי מוֹאָב וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל בָּלָק וַיֹּאמְרוּ מֵאֵן בִּלְעָם הֲלֹךְ עִמָּנוּ. טווַיֹּסֶף עוֹד בָּלָק שְׁלֹחַ שָׂרִים רַבִּים וְנִכְבָּדִים מֵאֵלֶּה. טזוַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל בִּלְעָם וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ כֹּה אָמַר בָּלָק בֶּן צִפּוֹר אַל נָא תִמָּנַע מֵהֲלֹךְ אֵלָי. יזכִּי כַבֵּד אֲכַבֶּדְךָ מְאֹד וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר תֹּאמַר אֵלַי אֶעֱשֶׂה וּלְכָה נָּא קָבָה לִּי אֵת הָעָם הַזֶּה. יחוַיַּעַן בִּלְעָם וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל עַבְדֵי בָלָק אִם יִתֶּן לִי בָלָק מְלֹא בֵיתוֹ כֶּסֶף וְזָהָב לֹא אוּכַל לַעֲבֹר אֶת פִּי יהוה אֱלֹהָי לַעֲשׂוֹת קְטַנָּה אוֹ גְדוֹלָה. יטוְעַתָּה שְׁבוּ נָא בָזֶה גַּם אַתֶּם הַלָּיְלָה וְאֵדְעָה מַה יֹּסֵף יהוה דַּבֵּר עִמִּי. כוַיָּבֹא אֱלֹהִים אֶל בִּלְעָם לַיְלָה וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ אִם לִקְרֹא לְךָ בָּאוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים קוּם לֵךְ אִתָּם וְאַךְ אֶת הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר אֲדַבֵּר אֵלֶיךָ אֹתוֹ תַעֲשֶׂה. כאוַיָּקָם בִּלְעָם בַּבֹּקֶר וַיַּחֲבֹשׁ אֶת אֲתֹנוֹ וַיֵּלֶךְ עִם שָׂרֵי מוֹאָב. כבוַיִּחַר אַף אֱלֹהִים כִּי הוֹלֵךְ הוּא וַיִּתְיַצֵּב מַלְאַךְ יהוה בַּדֶּרֶךְ לְשָׂטָן לוֹ. וְהוּא רֹכֵב עַל אֲתֹנוֹ וּשְׁנֵי נְעָרָיו עִמּוֹ. כגוַתֵּרֶא הָאָתוֹן אֶת מַלְאַךְ יהוה נִצָּב בַּדֶּרֶךְ וְחַרְבּוֹ שְׁלוּפָה בְּיָדוֹ וַתֵּט הָאָתוֹן מִן הַדֶּרֶךְ וַתֵּלֶךְ בַּשָּׂדֶה וַיַּךְ בִּלְעָם אֶת הָאָתוֹן לְהַטֹּתָהּ הַדָּרֶךְ. כדוַיַּעֲמֹד מַלְאַךְ יהוה בְּמִשְׁעוֹל הַכְּרָמִים גָּדֵר מִזֶּה וְגָדֵר מִזֶּה. כהוַתֵּרֶא הָאָתוֹן אֶת מַלְאַךְ יהוה וַתִּלָּחֵץ אֶל הַקִּיר וַתִּלְחַץ אֶת רֶגֶל בִּלְעָם אֶל הַקִּיר וַיֹּסֶף לְהַכֹּתָהּ. כווַיּוֹסֶף מַלְאַךְ יהוה עֲבוֹר וַיַּעֲמֹד בְּמָקוֹם צָר אֲשֶׁר אֵין דֶּרֶךְ לִנְטוֹת יָמִין וּשְׂמֹאול. כזוַתֵּרֶא הָאָתוֹן אֶת מַלְאַךְ יהוה וַתִּרְבַּץ תַּחַת בִּלְעָם וַיִּחַר אַף בִּלְעָם וַיַּךְ אֶת הָאָתוֹן בַּמַּקֵּל. כחוַיִּפְתַּח יהוה אֶת פִּי הָאָתוֹן וַתֹּאמֶר לְבִלְעָם מֶה עָשִׂיתִי לְךָ כִּי הִכִּיתַנִי זֶה שָׁלֹשׁ רְגָלִים. כטוַיֹּאמֶר בִּלְעָם לָאָתוֹן כִּי הִתְעַלַּלְתְּ בִּי לוּ יֶשׁ חֶרֶב בְּיָדִי כִּי עַתָּה הֲרַגְתִּיךְ. לוַתֹּאמֶר הָאָתוֹן אֶל בִּלְעָם הֲלוֹא אָנֹכִי אֲתֹנְךָ אֲשֶׁר רָכַבְתָּ עָלַי מֵעוֹדְךָ עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה הַהַסְכֵּן הִסְכַּנְתִּי לַעֲשׂוֹת לְךָ כֹּה וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא. לאוַיְגַל יהוה אֶת עֵינֵי בִלְעָם וַיַּרְא אֶת מַלְאַךְ יהוה נִצָּב בַּדֶּרֶךְ וְחַרְבּוֹ שְׁלֻפָה בְּיָדוֹ וַיִּקֹּד וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ לְאַפָּיו.
לבוַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו מַלְאַךְ יהוה עַל מָה הִכִּיתָ אֶת אֲתֹנְךָ זֶה שָׁלוֹשׁ רְגָלִים הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי יָצָאתִי לְשָׂטָן כִּי יָרַט הַדֶּרֶךְ לְנֶגְדִּי. לגוַתִּרְאַנִי הָאָתוֹן וַתֵּט לְפָנַי זֶה שָׁלֹשׁ רְגָלִים אוּלַי נָטְתָה מִפָּנַי כִּי עַתָּה גַּם אֹתְכָה הָרַגְתִּי וְאוֹתָהּ הֶחֱיֵיתִי. לדוַיֹּאמֶר בִּלְעָם אֶל מַלְאַךְ יהוה חָטָאתִי כִּי לֹא יָדַעְתִּי כִּי אַתָּה נִצָּב לִקְרָאתִי בַּדָּרֶךְ וְעַתָּה אִם רַע בְּעֵינֶיךָ אָשׁוּבָה לִּי. להוַיֹּאמֶר מַלְאַךְ יהוה אֶל בִּלְעָם לֵךְ עִם הָאֲנָשִׁים וְאֶפֶס אֶת הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר אֲדַבֵּר אֵלֶיךָ אֹתוֹ תְדַבֵּר וַיֵּלֶךְ בִּלְעָם עִם שָׂרֵי בָלָק.
לווַיִּשְׁמַע בָּלָק כִּי בָא בִלְעָם וַיֵּצֵא לִקְרָאתוֹ אֶל עִיר מוֹאָב אֲשֶׁר עַל גְּבוּל אַרְנֹן אֲשֶׁר בִּקְצֵה הַגְּבוּל. לזוַיֹּאמֶר בָּלָק אֶל בִּלְעָם הֲלֹא שָׁלֹחַ שָׁלַחְתִּי אֵלֶיךָ לִקְרֹא לָךְ לָמָּה לֹא הָלַכְתָּ אֵלָי הַאֻמְנָם לֹא אוּכַל כַּבְּדֶךָ. לחוַיֹּאמֶר בִּלְעָם אֶל בָּלָק הִנֵּה בָאתִי אֵלֶיךָ עַתָּה הֲיָכֹל אוּכַל דַּבֵּר מְאוּמָה הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר יָשִׂים אֱלֹהִים בְּפִי אֹתוֹ אֲדַבֵּר. לטוַיֵּלֶךְ בִּלְעָם עִם בָּלָק וַיָּבֹאוּ קִרְיַת חֻצוֹת. מוַיִּזְבַּח בָּלָק בָּקָר וָצֹאן וַיְשַׁלַּח לְבִלְעָם וְלַשָּׂרִים אֲשֶׁר אִתּוֹ. מאוַיְהִי בַבֹּקֶר וַיִּקַּח בָּלָק אֶת בִּלְעָם וַיַּעֲלֵהוּ בָּמוֹת בָּעַל וַיַּרְא מִשָּׁם קְצֵה הָעָם.
